KAGUA: Green Check Woven Storage Basket

Parading bold checks in soft sapling green, these beautiful KAGUA baskets are handwoven in rural Kenya from local sisal in three different sizes—one for almost every home storage need. Use a small woven basket for jewellery and watches, remote controls and cables, while medium and large woven baskets make handy and attractive storage for everything from laundry and loo rolls to rugs and blankets, slippers and children’s toys. The craftswomen who produce these KAGUA woven baskets all learned to weave local sisal fibres from a young age and practise this traditional craft within a small weaving group in rural Kenya. The basket room visits and spends time with this group as often as possible, and has built a strong bond with the craftswomen and their chairlady, Madam Dorcas, over the years. Before the basket room started trading with this group, the weavers would undertake the long journey to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets at city markets. Today, these women can earn a living safely and more efficiently from home, working to complete large and regular orders from the basket room during quiet moments between childcare, domestic work and farming.

Most of these weavers are from farming communities who rely on farming – and therefore, steady rainfall - to feed, support and clothe their families. So when farming slows down, weaving work picks up. Purchasing one of the basket room's woven baskets helps the basket room in its mission to empower African craftswomen to support themselves and their families more sustainably, and preserve this age-old craft.
