Habitat for Humanity is an organization that is known for its signature home builds. Recently, they announced that the Coleman family, consisting of Kelly Coleman and her five children (plus her 20-year-old daughter who is out of the home but still very much a part of the family), will be the recipients of a home build. This exciting news was celebrated at the Hard Hats and Heels event. The announcement received a lot of attention on social media, with many people expressing their admiration for Kelly and her family.
In addition to their home builds, Habitat for Humanity also offers a WomenBuild program. This program aims to encourage women to enter the trades and get involved in construction. They also work with construction companies to promote the hiring and advancement of women in the industry. By partnering with tech colleges and businesses in the community, Habitat for Humanity hopes to create more opportunities for women in non-traditional fields.
The community has shown great enthusiasm for Habitat for Humanity’s projects. Many service organizations, such as the SOAR Optimist International Fond du Lac, have expressed interest in getting involved in the 2024 build. The community recognizes the importance of women collaborating and taking charge in fields that are typically male-dominated. This inclusivity and support for women in the community is something that everyone can be proud of.
Stephanie Jo, who is involved in various community organizations, also shared her involvement in other projects. She is one of the organizers of the Pride Picnic, an LGBTQ+ celebration in Fond du Lac. She also helps with the Festival of Trees, a charity Christmas auction that benefits local nonprofits. Additionally, she is involved with Thelma, where she helps run the Women’s Empowerment’s Mentor in Training Program.
When asked about how she manages to do all of this, she credits her supportive social circle, professional network, and partner for giving her the time and support to be involved in these projects. She believes in pouring back into the community where her son is growing up and wants to make it a place that he can be proud of.
The location for the build has already been secured, thanks to the city gifting a double lot on Ledge View and Park. The build will also incorporate a new method called Fox Blocks, which involves pouring concrete within a styrofoam frame, making it energy-efficient and eco-conscious. Local businesses, such as Mark Cardinal Concrete & Construction, Ahern, C.D. Smith, and Gallery Frame Shop, have provided financial contributions and support for the project.
To get involved with Habitat for Humanity, there are various opportunities available. Volunteers can sign up through the Find Like United Way’s FONDI Volunteers page, where Habitat for Humanity’s volunteer opportunities are listed. If swinging a hammer isn’t your thing, there are still plenty of ways to help. Service organizations can provide meals for the volunteers on big build days, either by making the meals themselves or by hiring a business to bring food to the job site. Volunteers can also participate in events, such as the Celebrate Community event on February 17th, where Habitat for Humanity will have a booth. Those interested in volunteering can reach out to info@habitatfdl.org for more information.
There are also opportunities to volunteer at events and in the office, as well as opportunities for those with construction experience to be involved in build management. Habitat for Humanity’s build projects typically span seven to nine months, from planning to completion, and they welcome individuals who want to be part of the team.
Stephane Jo, who is a realtor, understands the importance of timelines and the various stages of the home building process. She encourages anyone who wants to help but doesn’t know how to reach out to Habitat for Humanity, as they will find something for them to do.
Overall, Habitat for Humanity’s projects in Fond du Lac have received tremendous support from the community. The organization’s commitment to empowering women in the trades and providing affordable housing opportunities is commendable. With the involvement of local businesses and volunteers, the 2024 build for the Coleman family is set to be a success. The community’s support and enthusiasm for these projects are what make Fond du Lac a place to be proud of.
