Summer in Fond du Lac is genuinely good. Like, really good. And if you’ve got kids in tow, you’re actually in luck — this city has more going on for families than people give it credit for. Whether you’re looking for a way to cool off on a hot Tuesday, something hands-on and creative for a rainy afternoon, or a full-day adventure the kids will be talking about for weeks, we’ve got you covered.
Here’s a roundup of our favorite spots across five categories: places to splash and swim, places to play, spots to get crafty, places to explore nature, and spots that sneak in a little learning while everyone’s having too much fun to notice.

💧 Places to Swim & Splash
Fairgrounds Family Aquatic Center
When you need a full water park experience without leaving the county, the Fairgrounds Family Aquatic Center delivers. Multiple water slides, interactive water play features, a sandy area for the little ones to dig around in, and grassy space for the adults who need a moment to just sit down — it’s got the whole summer vibe locked in. This is the kind of place where you show up for a couple of hours and end up staying until they close.
Taylor Park & Pool
If you haven’t been to Taylor Park & Pool, put it on the list now. It’s one of those places that makes you remember why you love living here. The outdoor Olympic-size pool has something for every age — deep end for the bigger kids, shallower areas for the little ones still figuring out their swim strokes — and right next door there’s a free splash pad for when someone needs a break from laps. The park itself is gorgeous: a pavilion that’s been standing for over 100 years, walking trails, and the kind of big shade trees that make a hot day feel like a completely different situation.
Fond du Lac Community Aquatic Center
Hot day? Rainy day? Doesn’t matter. The Fond du Lac Community Aquatic Center is indoors, which means it’s always swimming weather. Two pools cover the full range — a larger pool for older kids and lap swim, and a shallow-end pool designed with the tiniest splashers in mind. They also run swim lessons if you’ve got a kiddo who’s ready to level up their water confidence. It’s a great low-key option when you want a real pool experience without coordinating around the weather.

🛝 Places to Play
Good news: Fond du Lac is loaded with parks. We put together a full dedicated guide to the best playgrounds in the area — you can find that right here on Fondy Famous — but here are three that are especially perfect for summer.
Lakeside Park
Lakeside is the one. If someone asks you to name one Fond du Lac park, this is it. A huge playground, a free splash pad, a petting zoo the kids absolutely lose their minds over, beautiful lake views, and a lighthouse the little ones can walk around — plus the carousel is back in 2026 after its big renovation. Pack a lunch, bring a towel, and plan for a full afternoon.
Buttermilk Creek Park
Buttermilk Creek is the move when you’re planning something big. Multiple play areas mean kids of different ages all have their territory, there are grills and powered pavilions if you want to make it a proper cookout, and the space is comfortable enough for a birthday party that doesn’t require renting a venue. It’s also a great sledding hill when winter rolls back around, but that’s a story for another post.
Plamore Park
A real west-side gem that flies under the radar. Plamore is especially great for younger kids or those who need a little more encouragement before they tackle a climbing wall — parents consistently mention how the setup helps hesitant kids build confidence at their own pace. Worth knowing about when you want somewhere a little quieter.

🎨 Places to Get Crafty
The Creative Studio at Quilting Legacies
This one just opened and it’s already a standout. The Creative Studio is the brand-new creative branch of Quilting Legacies on South Main Street, and it’s exactly the kind of place Fond du Lac needed. We’re talking paint-your-own pottery and birthday celebration setups that are genuinely fun for kids. If you’re looking for a hands-on summer activity that comes home as something they actually made — this is it. Check their website for current classes and events.
THELMA — Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts
Downtown’s Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts is so much more than a concert venue. THELMA runs art classes all year long — painting, drawing, fiber arts, mixed media — designed for all ages and skill levels. For older kids (grades 4–8), their youth theater camp On Stage @ THELMA is a two-week immersive experience where kids learn lines, music, choreography, and even help build the sets for a real musical production. If you’ve got a kid who loves performing, this is the summer experience they’ll be talking about for years.
Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac
The Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac runs dedicated kids’ art programs throughout the summer — including Mini Monets (art classes for littles), maker programs, and creative workshops built around science, gardening, and more. The museum itself is 15,000 square feet of hands-on everything, but the summer programming adds a whole other layer of structured creative time for kids who want to make something. Memberships are available and priced to be accessible for all families.

🌿 Places to Explore Nature
Eldorado Marsh & the Mascoutin Valley State Trail
Five miles west of the city, Eldorado Marsh is over 6,000 acres of state-owned wetland that honestly feels like a secret most people drive right past. A trail runs through the center of the marsh, putting you right in the middle of deer, waterfowl, muskrats, rabbits, herons, and more — the kind of wildlife your kids will actually get excited about spotting. The Mascoutin Valley State Trail connects right through it, making it a great option for families who want to bike or hike and come home with a genuine nature story to tell. Flat, accessible, and completely free.
Hobb’s Woods
The most popular trail in Fond du Lac for a reason. Hobb’s Woods is a 60-acre county park about three miles south of the city, and it’s the kind of place that genuinely feels like you’ve stepped into a different world. Three miles of trails wind through dense woodland and open prairie, with boardwalks and bridges crossing over Parsons Creek as it carves its way through the ravine below. Kids love the creek — it’s shallow, it’s scenic, and it has naturally reproducing brook trout in it, which is just cool to know. Bring bug spray in the morning, wear shoes you don’t mind getting a little muddy, and plan to stay longer than you think you will.
Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum at UW-Fond du Lac
This one is a local secret that deserves way more attention. The Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum on the UW-Fond du Lac campus features scenic trails winding through native prairie, wildflowers, and grasslands, plus a formal arboretum with native Wisconsin trees and shrubs. Interpretive signs make it educational without feeling like a field trip. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it’s one of those places where kids naturally start asking questions — which is the whole point.

📚 Places to Learn
Fond du Lac Public Library — Summer Reading 2026
The Fond du Lac Public Library kicks off Summer Reading 2026 on June 1 with the theme “Unearth a Story” — and the lineup of events this year is genuinely stacked. We’re talking a glow-in-the-dark escape room, a live raptor visit, a bubble show, a magician, a caves and bats session with Ledge View Nature Center, and the always-popular Touch a Truck event. Kids can track their reading minutes online through Beanstack and earn prizes along the way. The program runs through August 16 and there are two locations — Main Library at 32 Sheboygan St. and the Buechel Branch at 1132 E. Johnson St. Free, fun, and exactly what summers should feel like.
Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac
We mentioned the creative programs above, but the Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac deserves a full spot in this category too — because learning is what it’s actually built around. Career-oriented exhibits let kids try being a firefighter, a dairy farmer, a radio broadcaster, and more. The outdoor area has a trike track, fishing, and a garden. Summer programs add cooking classes (using produce from their own garden), STEAM exploration sessions, and more. It’s one of the best-kept secrets in the city for keeping curious kids engaged all summer long.
Historic Galloway House & Village
If you’ve never taken the kids to Galloway House & Village, this is the summer to fix that. Tucked into 15 acres right here in Fond du Lac, this living history museum is a three-in-one experience: a restored 1847 30-room mansion, a recreated 1800s Wisconsin village complete with a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and log cabin, and a full museum tracing local history from prehistoric times through the 20th century. Guided tours make the whole thing come alive in a way a textbook never could. It’s the kind of place that makes kids ask questions you actually have to think about — and that’s the whole point.
Fond du Lac doesn’t need to be a destination to feel like one. This summer, it’s all right here. Get out there — the kids will thank you for it.
